We made it into Quepos at around 5pm, so it was about a 5 hour drive from Monteverde. I suppose if we did this drive again, an earlier start would help. Also, during the dry season, I'm sure it would be less hair-raising. But it all paid off with Villas Nicolas.
Of course, the GPS found its own creative way to the hotel - up steep, unpaved roads (and then later freaked out about finding the rental car drop-off place). It was absolutely POURING rain when we went to check in!
This place was amazing! Jungle relaxation. Very nicely done. We had a type 3 suite (#6) with a full kitchen, so later we walked to the store and got some groceries. Made spaghetti. Everything about the villa is just so coolly done. Each villa is independently owned and decorated by the owner, so you get a lot of character. And your very own pet cat!
A fantastic patio!
Full kitchen.
Cozy sitting area in the living room.
Bed and daybed in the bedroom, that looks out on the living room, kitchen, and doors to the patio.
And a neatly-tiled bathroom.
Villas Nicolas - recommended
$279.32 for 2 nights, tax included ($139.66/night)
Other notes: safe for $3/day, phone in room, laundry service ($20/load), restaurant open in high season, breakfast included in price in high season, no beach towels provided. If you are traveling with children, a more kid-friendly option might be Hotel Sí Como No - haven't been there, but I've read a lot of good things...
Added 2-2-10: Let me just say that - based on staying in two different rooms now - the villas are vastly different from each other. We just recently stayed in #2. Both are type 3 rooms, but #2 can't hold a light to #6.
